Willamette Ale and Cider House (What’s Behind the Secret Door?)

Willamette Ale & Cider House

Today we’re in West Linn at the heart of Willamette’s Historic District, and it’s cold and wet.

And what better way to get out of the cold then to grab a drink at Willamette Ale & Cider House.

But before we head inside, the building where the Willamette Ale & Cider House resides now used to be this little town’s General Store for almost 100 years.

For the majority of the time, the general store was owned and operated by the Fritchies.  Ben Sr. bought the store in 1946, after moving his family out west from Nebraska during the Great Depression.  Ben Jr. eventually took over the General Store and was a major contributor to the formation of the Old Time Fair that we see come through here every summer down in Willamette Park.

I was reading an article on the West Linn Historical Society about Ben Fritchies, and how we loved going down to the wetlands to play with frogs.  And that reminded me of a comment I got on another episode where this person said they remember playing the frogs in Willamette when they were growing up here.

Anyway, the General Store has been everything from a hardware store, cabinetry store, a brewery, and of course a general store!

But now, it’s home to the Willamette Ale and Cider House.  Let’s go inside …

As you can see this pub is so charming.  It’s a replica of pubs in London with all the appropriate theming going on.

What I love about the story of the Willamette Ale and Cider House is that it’s a family owned and run business.  An English themed pub created by a Korean-American, whose sons are half Asian, like me. Haha.

The Chay family owned this building for several years before retrofitting this building to make their vision come to life plus make it up-to-date for earthquakes, etc.

So, the next time you’re in the West Linn area, think about stopping by the Willamette Ale and Cider House.
